Introducing NetLynx Remote: Free Open-Source RDP Client for Mac & Windows
Today, we're thrilled to announce NetLynx Remote โ a completely free, open-source remote desktop client for Windows and macOS. No subscriptions. No license fees. No "commercial use detected" popups. Just fast, reliable RDP access to any Windows machine.
This has been months in the making, and we can't wait to share it with you.
The Problem: Remote Desktop Shouldn't Cost a Fortune
If you've ever used a remote desktop tool, you know the frustration. The industry has quietly shifted to a subscription-based model that squeezes users at every turn:
- TeamViewer costs upwards of $50/month for business use โ and has become infamous for flagging personal users with "commercial use detected" warnings that lock you out of your own sessions.
- AnyDesk charges $15โ$30/month per user for its professional tiers, with the free version increasingly limited.
- Other tools like Splashtop, ConnectWise, and LogMeIn charge $100โ$200+ per year per technician.
For enterprise IT departments with large budgets, these costs are manageable. But for freelance IT professionals, small businesses, home lab enthusiasts, and anyone who just needs to remote into a machine occasionally? It's a hard pill to swallow.
The Solution: NetLynx Remote
NetLynx Remote is a native RDP client that connects directly to Windows machines using the standard Remote Desktop Protocol. No relay servers, no middlemen, no accounts required. It's the tool we wished existed โ so we built it.
Here's what you get out of the box:
- ๐ฅ๏ธ Native RDP protocol support โ connects directly to any Windows machine with Remote Desktop enabled. No proprietary protocols, no vendor lock-in.
- ๐ Cross-platform โ runs on both Windows and macOS, built with modern cross-platform technology for a native feel on each OS.
- ๐ File transfer โ drag and drop files between your local machine and the remote desktop seamlessly.
- ๐ Clipboard sync โ copy text and files on one end, paste on the other. It just works.
- ๐ฅ๏ธ Multi-monitor support โ use all your monitors with the remote session, or pick specific ones.
- ๐ฌ Session recording โ record remote sessions for training, compliance, or documentation.
- ๐ Connection bookmarks โ save your frequently accessed machines with nicknames, credentials, and display preferences.
- โก Low latency โ direct peer-to-peer connection means minimal lag. No traffic routing through third-party servers.
Why Open Source?
We made NetLynx Remote open source because transparency builds trust โ especially with remote access software.
When you install a remote desktop tool, you're giving it deep access to your system. You're trusting that it's not collecting telemetry, phoning home, or containing backdoors. With closed-source tools, that trust is based entirely on a company's word.
With NetLynx Remote, you don't have to take our word for it. The code is right there on GitHub. Anyone can:
- Audit the code โ verify there's no hidden telemetry, data collection, or backdoors.
- Contribute improvements โ found a bug? Want a feature? Submit a pull request.
- Fork and customize โ need a specialized version for your organization? Go for it.
- Build from source โ compile it yourself if you want maximum assurance.
Security researchers, enterprise IT teams, and privacy-conscious users: this is for you.
How It's Different from AnyDesk & TeamViewer
Let's be direct about what sets NetLynx Remote apart:
| Feature | NetLynx Remote | TeamViewer | AnyDesk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price | Free forever | $50+/mo | $15+/mo |
| Account required | No | Yes | Yes |
| Open source | Yes | No | No |
| Direct connection | Yes (RDP) | Relay server | Relay server |
| Usage limits | None | Time limits on free | Session limits |
| "Commercial use" nag | Never | Yes | Sometimes |
| Watermarks | None | On free tier | On free tier |
The key difference is architectural: TeamViewer and AnyDesk route your connection through their relay servers. That's why they need accounts and subscriptions โ you're paying for their infrastructure. NetLynx Remote connects directly via RDP, peer-to-peer. No middleman means no fees and lower latency.
Who Is This For?
NetLynx Remote is built for anyone who needs remote desktop access without the overhead:
- IT teams managing Windows servers โ connect to your fleet of Windows servers and workstations without per-seat licensing eating your budget.
- Remote workers โ access your office workstation from home with a smooth, lag-free experience.
- The family tech support hero โ we all have that role. Help your parents, grandparents, or friends fix their computers without paying $50/month for the privilege.
- Home lab enthusiasts โ manage your Proxmox VMs, Windows servers, and development machines from the couch.
What's on the Roadmap
This is just the beginning. Here's what we're working on next:
- ๐ง Linux support โ a native Linux client is in active development.
- ๐ฑ Mobile apps โ iOS and Android clients for remote access on the go.
- ๐ Wake-on-LAN integration โ power on remote machines before connecting, right from the app.
- ๐ SSH tunnel mode โ for secure connections across the internet without VPN configuration.
- ๐ฅ Team features โ shared connection lists and role-based access for IT teams.
